Wakhan Valley: ancient fortresses on the Afghan border

Between Ishkashim and Langar, the Panj river separates Tajikistan from Afghanistan's Wakhan Corridor, with the snowy Hindu Kush on the far bank. The Tajik side of the valley is lined with Pamiri villages, hot springs, Buddhist ruins and fortresses more than 2,000 years old: one of the most beautiful stretches of the Pamir journey.

Wakhan Valley: ancient fortresses on the Afghan border

At a glance

  • Where: in the Gorno-Badakhshan (GBAO) region of south-eastern Tajikistan, from Ishkashim to Langar.
  • How long: two or three days on a Pamir Highway trip.
  • Best time: June to September; snow and rain close mountain roads at other times.
  • Altitude: from about 2,500 m at Ishkashim to 2,800–3,000 m at Langar.

Interesting facts

  • At Langar, the Pamir and Wakhan rivers join to form the Panj, which becomes the Amu Darya further downstream.
  • The narrow Afghan strip across the river, the Wakhan Corridor, was drawn as a buffer between the British and Russian empires at the end of the 19th century.
  • Yamchun fortress, on a ridge at about 3,000 m, dates from the 3rd century BC, and its towers still rise 20–25 m.
  • Vrang has the remains of a Buddhist stupa and monks' caves from the 4th–7th centuries AD, a reminder that Buddhism once travelled this route.
  • The rocks above Langar carry some 6,000 carvings of ibex, hunters and horsemen.
  • The traditional Pamiri house, the chid, has five wooden pillars, linked by local Ismaili Muslims to the five members of the Prophet's family, and a square skylight of stacked wooden frames.

What to see and do

Drive slowly along the river from Ishkashim, stopping at the Khaakha fortress, the hot spring of Bibi Fatima Zahra (above 40 °C all year, with separate hours for men and women) and the walls of Yamchun. In Yamg you can visit the museum-house of the Sufi poet and astronomer Mubarak Wakhani, then continue to Vrang and Langar for the petroglyphs and the views of the Hindu Kush, whose highest peaks pass 7,000 m.

Nights are spent in family homestays, where you sleep on mattresses in the main room of a chid and eat bread, soup and apricots from the garden.

Important notes

  • Permit: every visitor to the Pamirs needs a GBAO permit, even with visa-free entry. With an e-visa it costs USD 20 extra, chosen when you apply. Read our Tajikistan visa guide.
  • Border: the far bank is Afghanistan. Do not photograph the border posts or soldiers, and do not try to cross. The cross-border market at Ishkashim has been closed since 2020, and it is not clear when it will reopen.
  • Roads: expect gravel, broken asphalt and river crossings; a sturdy 4x4 and an experienced driver are essential.
  • Altitude: sleep at Langar only after a few nights higher than 2,000 m if you can.

What to bring

  • Warm layers: nights are cold even in July.
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat for the strong mountain sun.
  • Cash in somoni; there are no ATMs in the villages.
  • A swimsuit for the hot springs.
  • Snacks, a refillable bottle and water purification tablets.
