Fann Mountains in 4 Days from Dushanbe: Iskanderkul, Kulikalon and the Seven Lakes
Four days by private 4×4 through the Fann Mountains: Iskanderkul with Snake Lake and the waterfall, the hike to the Kulikalon lakes from Artuch, and the…
The whole Pamir Highway one way, in a 4×4 for your group only, on the date you choose: the Afghan border along the Panj, the Wakhan Valley, the high lakes of the Eastern Pamirs and the Kyzyl-Art pass into Kyrgyzstan. Guesthouses with breakfast and dinner.
The Pamir Highway, from Dushanbe in Tajikistan to Osh in Kyrgyzstan, in seven days by private 4×4. It is one of the great road trips of the world: the Panj River with Afghanistan on the far bank, the Wakhan Valley under the Hindu Kush, the empty high plateau of the Eastern Pamirs and the Kyzyl-Art pass at about 4,280 metres.
This is not a luxury trip. The roads are rough, the days are long, and nights are spent in simple family guesthouses with basic facilities. What you get in return is a landscape few people ever see, and evenings with the families who live in it.
Lunches are at roadside tea houses on the way and paid on the spot. Entrance fees, hot springs and the national reserve fee are paid locally too.
Adventurous travellers who are comfortable with long days in a car, high altitude and simple rooms, and who want to see the Pamirs properly rather than in a hurry.
Pickup at your hotel in Dushanbe and the start of the drive towards the Pamirs. The road passes the Nurek Reservoir, the "Tajik Sea" of blue water between dry hills, with a photo stop if time allows.
Continue to Kulob, one of the oldest towns in southern Tajikistan, where you may stop for lunch or a short visit to the mausoleum of Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani. After Kulob the road reaches the Panj River and the gateway to the Pamirs.
Arrive in Kalai-Khumb, a small town in the Darvoz region on the Panj. Lunch on the way is at a local tea house and paid on the spot. Dinner and the night are at a family guesthouse with basic facilities and a shower.
After breakfast, one of the most spectacular days of the trip. The road follows the Panj River, which is the border with Afghanistan, and for hours you can see Afghan villages, footpaths and houses on the other bank, sometimes only a stone's throw away.
The road runs through narrow gorges and small settlements, with photo stops along the way. Lunch is at a roadside tea house, paid on the spot.
Arrive in Khorog, the capital of Gorno-Badakhshan and the main town of the Pamirs. Dinner and the night at a guesthouse in Khorog.
Leave Khorog to the south. Stop at Garm Chashma, one of the best-known hot springs in the Pamirs, with its white mineral terraces; you can bathe if it is open and time allows.
Continue to Ishkashim, the small town at the entrance to the Wakhan Valley, facing another Ishkashim on the Afghan side of the river. From here the valley runs east along the Panj, between the Pamirs and the Hindu Kush, on an ancient branch of the Silk Road.
Lunch on the way is paid on the spot. Dinner and the night at a village guesthouse in the Wakhan.
After breakfast, deeper into the Wakhan. The first highlight is the Yamchun fortress, high on the hillside above the valley, with views across the river to the Afghan Wakhan and the Hindu Kush.
Just above it is the Bibi Fatima hot spring, simple and local in style, where you can bathe if it is open. Then continue to Vrang, where you may stop at the old Buddhist stupa above the village.
Arrive in Langar, a remote village at the upper end of the Wakhan. Lunch on the way is paid on the spot; dinner and the night are at a village guesthouse.
After breakfast, leave the Wakhan Valley and climb to the high plateau of the Eastern Pamirs over the Khargush pass. This is the wildest section of the route: very few settlements, rough roads and high altitude, with timings that depend on the weather and the road.
Stop at Yashilkul, a blue lake among bare mountains, for a short walk and photographs.
Arrive in Bulunkul, one of the most remote villages in Tajikistan, known for its harsh winters. Dinner and the night at a simple family guesthouse.
After breakfast, cross the open high plateau of the Eastern Pamirs: wide valleys, distant ranges and yak herds, with very few settlements. Pass through Alichur and stop in Murghab, the main town of the Eastern Pamirs, for its bazaar and supplies.
Continue north to Karakul, a great lake at almost 4,000 metres under bare mountains. Lunch on the way is paid on the spot. Dinner and the last night in Tajikistan are at a guesthouse in Karakul village.
After breakfast, the last and longest day. Cross the red high-altitude desert to the Kyzyl-Art pass, at about 4,280 metres, and the Tajik–Kyrgyz border. Timing at the border depends on the procedures, the weather and the number of travellers that day.
In Kyrgyzstan, stop in Sary-Tash for lunch (paid on the spot), then drive through the Alay Valley and over the last passes to Osh. The tour ends at your hotel or Osh airport.
