About this trip

Seven days across the roof of the world: two passes above 4,200 metres, a lake in a meteorite crater, and three days along the Panj with Afghanistan on the far bank.

The M41 climbs out of the Fergana foothills and stays high for four days. You cross into Tajikistan's Gorno-Badakhshan over the Kyzyl-Art Pass (4,282 m), sleep beside Karakul at 3,900 m and cross the Ak-Baital Pass (4,655 m), the highest point of the trip. Then the Wakhan: apricot orchards, ruined fortresses and hot springs, with the Hindu Kush rising across the river. The descent to Dushanbe is split over two days, so no day runs much longer than nine hours.

A private tour: the 4×4 and driver are yours alone, for up to four travellers. You choose the date between 1 June and 10 October and the pick-up time, and you can ask us to add a rest day or change a night. The price is for the whole car and depends on how many of you travel; the booking form shows it. For a group of five or more, message us on WhatsApp.

Good to know

Altitude. Days 1 to 3 are spent mostly above 3,500 m. Most people have a headache on the first evening and feel fine by the second. Take it gently, drink plenty of water and tell us about any medical condition before you travel. If you would rather start lower, we can put the first night in Sary-Tash (3,170 m) instead.

GBAO permit. The Pamir region needs a GBAO permit on top of your Tajik visa, and we arrange it. Send us a clear photo of each passport at least five working days before departure. Passports and permits are checked at the border and at several posts on the way, so keep them within reach.

Guesthouses. Simple, family-run and welcoming: basic facilities, often shared bathrooms, limited hot water and very little Wi-Fi. In Langar and Bulunkul everyone may sleep in one warm room on mattresses on the floor. The last night in Kulob is a proper hotel.

Money and phone. There are no ATMs for foreign cards between Osh and Khorog. Bring enough US dollars or Kyrgyz som in cash. Murghab, on Day 2, is the place to change money and buy a Tajik SIM card; mobile signal is patchy until Khorog.

Your driver. Our drivers are experienced Pamiris who know these roads and the families along them. Their English covers distances, stops, food and everything practical rather than a full guided commentary. We can add a dedicated English-speaking guide on request.

If a road closes. Heavy weather sometimes closes the Khargush road. We then reach the Wakhan from Khorog and run the valley in the opposite direction, with one night moved and nothing cut from the trip. Your safety comes first, and we tell you the moment we know.

The other way round. We also run this route from Dushanbe to Osh — see our Pamir Highway tour from Dushanbe to Osh.

Day by day

  • Day 1 — Osh – Taldyk Pass – Sary-Tash – Kyzyl-Art Pass – Karakul

Morning pick-up at your hotel in Osh. The road climbs into the Alay Range over the Taldyk Pass (3,615 m) to Sary-Tash, where on a clear day the snow wall of the Trans-Alay stands across the valley, with Lenin Peak (7,134 m) at its centre.

Kyrgyz exit formalities, then twenty kilometres of high no-man's-land over the Kyzyl-Art Pass (4,282 m) into Tajikistan's Gorno-Badakhshan, where your GBAO permit is checked. Down to Karakul, a vast lake in an ancient meteorite crater ringed by bare ochre mountains.

    Overnight: homestay in Karakul (3,900 m) · Meals: dinner · ≈ 260 km, 7–8 h including the border

  • Day 2 — Karakul – Ak-Baital Pass – Murghab – Alichur – Yashilkul – Bulunkul

Along the Chinese border fence to the Ak-Baital Pass at 4,655 m, the highest point of the journey, then down to Murghab, the main town of the Eastern Pamir, where the bazaar is built from old shipping containers. This is the place to change money and buy a local SIM card.

Across the wide Alichur plateau, grazed by yaks and dotted with Kyrgyz yurts, with an afternoon at turquoise Yashilkul and its hot springs before the short run to Bulunkul — one of the coldest inhabited places in Central Asia, with one of the best night skies anywhere.

    Overnight: guesthouse in Bulunkul (3,750 m) · Meals: breakfast, dinner · ≈ 270 km, 7–8 h

  • Day 3 — Bulunkul – Khargush Pass – Pamir River – Langar

South on the rough Khargush road over the pass (about 4,344 m), past high lakes and marmot colonies, to the military post where passports and permits are checked. Beyond it the first views open across Afghanistan's Wakhan Corridor to the peaks of the Hindu Kush.

The track drops beside the Pamir River, with Afghanistan a stone's throw away on the far bank, and reaches Langar, the first green village of the Wakhan, with Bronze Age petroglyphs on the hillside above the houses. A short driving day, so there is time to walk up to the carvings.

    Overnight: homestay in Langar (2,800 m) · Meals: breakfast, dinner · ≈ 130 km, 6–7 h on rough road

  • Day 4 — Langar – Vrang – Yamchun – Bibi Fatima – Ishkashim – Garm Chashma – Khorog

The richest day of the trip, with Afghan villages across the Panj almost all the way. The Buddhist stupa terraces at Vrang; the towers and broken walls of Yamchun Fortress high above the river; and just above it the Bibi Fatima hot spring, running out of the rock into a small bathhouse.

Through Ishkashim, where the valley widens, then a side trip up a narrow gorge to Garm Chashma and its white mineral terraces, before reaching Khorog in the evening — the capital of the Pamirs, with a proper bazaar, cafés and a botanical garden above the town.

    Overnight: guesthouse in Khorog (2,100 m) · Meals: breakfast, dinner · ≈ 215 km, 8–9 h with stops

  • Day 5 — Khorog – Panj River road – Rushan – Vanj – Kalai-Khumb

One of the most striking drives of the whole route. The road hugs the Panj through a deep gorge, for long stretches close enough to see Afghan farmers working terraced fields, footpaths cut into the cliffs and donkeys on the opposite bank.

Photo stops wherever the road allows, and a pause at Rushan or the mouth of the Vanj valley, before arriving in Kalai-Khumb (1,200 m), a green town where two rivers meet and the warmest night of the tour.

    Overnight: guesthouse in Kalai-Khumb · Meals: breakfast, dinner · ≈ 240 km, 7–8 h

  • Day 6 — Kalai-Khumb – Shuroobod Pass – Kulob

A gentler day and a complete change of landscape. The road follows the Panj downstream through a narrow gorge, with the Afghan villages still across the river, then turns away from it and climbs the Shuroobod pass (about 2,000 m) before dropping into the warm Khatlon plains of orchards and cotton fields.

Arrive in Kulob in the afternoon, with time for the 14th-century Mausoleum of Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani at the heart of the old town, before a proper hotel and a hot shower.

    Overnight: hotel in Kulob · Meals: breakfast, dinner · ≈ 180 km, 4–5 h

  • Day 7 — Kulob – Nurek Reservoir – Dushanbe

A relaxed last morning. After breakfast, the fast road north with a stop at the viewpoint above the turquoise Nurek Reservoir, held back by one of the tallest dams in the world.

Arrival in Dushanbe around midday and drop-off at your hotel or the airport. If your flight is late, we can add the Hisor Fortress just west of the city — tell us in advance.

    Meals: breakfast · ≈ 200 km, 3–3.5 h · End of our services
