Tajikistan has become much easier to visit. Citizens of more than 90 countries can now enter without a visa, and most other travellers can get an e-visa online in a few steps. The Pamirs still need a separate permit, and some stays need registration. This guide explains every rule in plain language, based on official Tajik sources and checked against recent news. Rules can change at short notice, so please check the official sources listed at the end before you travel.

Quick facts
| Topic | Rule (as of 19 October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Visa-free entry | 91 countries for ordinary passports (8 with no fixed limit, 4 for up to 90 days, 79 for up to 30 days), plus Panama for up to 14 days. 15 more countries are visa-free for 14 days for travellers over 55 only. |
| Who still needs a visa | Among others, the UK, Türkiye, India, Israel, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and China (under 55) |
| E-visa | Apply only at www.evisa.tj. USD 30 single entry, USD 50 multiple entry. Valid 90 days, maximum stay 60 days. Cannot be extended. |
| GBAO (Pamir) permit | Required for all foreigners, including visa-free visitors. USD 20 as an add-on to the e-visa. |
| Registration | Visa-free visitors: register within 10 working days if staying longer than that. E-visa holders are exempt. A bill to extend this to 15 working days has passed the lower house but is not yet in force. |
| Passport | Valid at least 6 months beyond arrival, at least 2 blank pages (recommended) |
| Currency | No entry limit (declare above USD 10,000). Exit: declaration needed above USD 3,000. |
| Drones | Advance permission required |
Visa-free entry
Tajikistan grants visa-free entry in two ways. Some countries have agreements with Tajikistan, mostly former Soviet states. Others are on a unilateral list. Tajikistan opened that list on 1 January 2022 with 52 countries. It added 25 more on 1 May 2024 (Government Decree No. 190 of 28 March 2024). Other countries were added later by agreement.
The table below follows the official country table of the Consular Department of the Tajik Ministry of Foreign Affairs (consular.tj, “Procedure for entry”), checked on 19 October 2026. It applies to ordinary (national) passports. Diplomatic and service passports have different rules.
No fixed time limit (agreements)
| Countries | Stay |
|---|---|
| Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Ukraine, North Korea (DPRK) | No fixed limit (registration rules still apply) |
| Moldova | Official table still shows “indefinitely”. A new bilateral arrangement in force from 1 April 2026 sets up to 90 days in any 180-day period (MFA statement, Khovar, 4 May 2026). Plan for 90/180. |
Up to 90 days (agreements)
| Countries | Stay |
|---|---|
| Armenia, Azerbaijan, Grenada, Suriname | Up to 90 days |
| Dominica | A visa-waiver agreement was reported as in force from July/August 2025, with up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The official consular table still shows only “14 days, over 55”. Check before travel. |
Up to 30 days (unilateral list and Iran/Uzbekistan agreements)
79 countries, for any purpose of travel, as listed in the official table:
| Region | Countries |
|---|---|
| Europe | Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Holy See (Vatican), Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland |
| Americas and Caribbean | Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Bahamas, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Jamaica, Mexico, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, United States |
| Asia | Brunei, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Uzbekistan |
| Middle East | Bahrain, Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates |
| Oceania | Australia, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, New Zealand, Solomon Islands |
Notes:
- Iran: visa-free travel started on 10 August 2024, at first only on direct Dushanbe–Tehran flights. Since 5 October 2026 it also covers land borders and flights via third countries. Stay: up to 30 days in any 90-day period (Asia-Plus, 7 October 2026).
- Uzbekistan: visa-free since 2018 under a bilateral agreement.
- Palestine is on the 2024 list for diplomatic, service and special passports only.
Up to 14 days
| Countries | Condition |
|---|---|
| Panama | Up to 14 days, no age condition (per official table) |
| Albania, Algeria, Barbados, China, Dominica, Fiji, Laos, Lebanon, Madagascar, Morocco, Nicaragua, North Macedonia, Tunisia, Vanuatu, Vietnam | Up to 14 days, only for travellers over 55 |
Note: the 2024 government announcement listed 16 countries in the over-55 group, including Panama. The current official table shows Panama as 14 days with no age condition. If you are from Panama and under 55, confirm with a Tajik embassy before travel.
Total
- 91 countries are visa-free for ordinary passports for 30 days or more, or with no fixed limit.
- Add Panama (14 days) and you reach 92.
- 15 more countries are visa-free only for travellers over 55, for 14 days.
Important conditions
- Visa-free stays are for any purpose of travel, but not for work, study or residence. These need a proper visa in advance.
- If you want to stay longer than your visa-free period, get an e-visa before you travel. You cannot simply extend a visa-free stay.
- A GBAO permit is still needed for the Pamirs (see below).
Who still needs a visa
Citizens of every country not listed above need a visa. Common examples:
- United Kingdom: visa required. UK citizens are not on the visa-free list. Use the e-visa.
- Türkiye: visa required since 20 April 2024.
- India, Israel, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan: visa required for ordinary passports.
- China: visa required for travellers under 55.
E-visa
Basics
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Official website | www.evisa.tj only |
| Eligible | Citizens of most countries. The Consular Department gives two different figures: 126 countries (e-visa page) and 140 countries (visa-on-arrival page). Check your nationality on evisa.tj. |
| Types | Tourist single entry, tourist multiple entry |
| Fee | USD 30 single entry, USD 50 multiple entry (Government Resolution No. 476, 8 September 2025) |
| GBAO permit add-on | USD 20 |
| Validity | 90 days |
| Maximum stay | 60 days |
| Extension | Not possible |
| Payment | Visa, Mastercard, American Express, UnionPay |
| Registration | E-visa holders are exempt |
| Entry points | International airports and the main land crossings open to foreigners |
Note on validity: the Tajik Consular Department says the e-visa is valid for 90 days with a maximum stay of 60 days. The UK government says “valid for 60 days after approval”. We follow the official Tajik wording, but choose your dates so your whole trip fits inside the dates printed on the visa.
Processing time
There is no official processing time. The application is checked only after payment. In practice, many visas arrive in a few working days, but some take much longer. The UK government advises allowing at least two weeks. The US Embassy notes that some e-visa approvals have taken a long time. Apply at least 2 to 3 weeks before travel, and earlier if you also need a GBAO permit.
Step by step
- Go to www.evisa.tj. Type the address yourself.
- Fill in the form: personal details, passport details, dates and purpose of travel.
- If you will visit the Pamirs, tick the GBAO permit option (USD 20).
- Upload a scan of your passport data page and a recent photo. Files must be JPEG (not PDF), maximum 1 MB each.
- Pay online by card.
- Wait for the decision by email. The visa comes as an A4 PDF.
- Print it. Keep the printout with your passport for the whole trip.
Photo and passport requirements
- Passport: as a rule, valid for at least 6 months.
- The passport scan must be clear and authentic.
- Photo: recent, colour, plain light background, face clearly visible. The portal does not publish a detailed photo specification. Use a standard passport-style photo.
- Check every letter and number. Your name and passport number must match your passport exactly.
What to print
- The e-visa (A4).
- The GBAO permit, if it is a separate page.
- Your hotel bookings or tour confirmation. These are not always requested, but they help.
Beware of unofficial websites
Many websites look official and offer a “Tajikistan e-visa”. Most are private agencies. They charge several times the official fee, and some are scams. The only official portal is www.evisa.tj. The official fee is USD 30 or USD 50, plus USD 20 for GBAO.
GBAO permit (Pamirs)

When you need it
You need a permit to enter the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO). This is required for every foreigner, including visa-free visitors and e-visa holders. It covers:
- The Pamir Highway (M41) from the GBAO boundary before Kalaikhum (on both the Tavildara and Kulob routes), including Kalaikhum, Khorog and Murghab
- The Wakhan Valley (Ishkashim, Langar)
- The Bartang Valley
- The districts of Darvoz, Vanj, Rushon, Shughnon, Roshtqal’a, Ishkashim and Murghab
You do not need a GBAO permit for Dushanbe, the Fann Mountains, Iskanderkul, the Seven Lakes (Haft Kul), Khujand or Istaravshan. These are outside GBAO.
How to get it
| Route | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| With your e-visa at evisa.tj | USD 20 | Easiest. Only possible if you apply for an e-visa. |
| Through a Tajik embassy | Per embassy (e.g. USD 20) | With a visa application, or as a stand-alone permit for visa-free travellers at some embassies. The UK government tells UK residents to apply through the embassy. |
| OVIR office in Dushanbe (Mirzo Tursunzoda Street 5) | Small fee in somoni | Bring your original passport. OVIR issues permits for ordinary passports only. Fees reported by travellers vary widely (about 20 to 180 somoni, sometimes more); insist on an official bank receipt. |
| OVIR office in Khujand | Small fee in somoni | Reported to work, 2025 |
| Through a licensed tour operator | Service fee | Practical for visa-free travellers |
Visa-free travellers cannot buy a permit alone through evisa.tj. They usually get it at OVIR or through a tour operator. This is an important point for US, EU, Japanese and other visa-free visitors.
Validity
The permit is issued for specific dates. Enter GBAO within those dates. Operators report that it is usually issued for up to one month and can be extended at an OVIR office, including in Khorog. Keep several printed copies.
Checkpoints
There are several checkpoints (reports say six to eight) on the Pamir Highway between Kalaikhum and the Kyrgyz border. Officers check your passport, visa or entry stamp, and permit. Stay polite and patient. Do not pay unofficial “fees”. If your papers are in order, you do not owe anything.
Permits can be suspended at short notice for security reasons. The US State Department currently advises travellers to reconsider travel to GBAO, and on 19 August 2026 the UK government updated its advice after armed clashes near the Afghan border. Check the latest advice before you go.
Extra permits inside GBAO
| Area | Extra permit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Lake Sarez | Yes, from the Committee for Emergency Situations in Dushanbe | Rarely granted. Allow several weeks. Sources disagree on cost (from free to about USD 50 per day). |
| Zorkul Nature Reserve | Yes, reserve permit | A few US dollars per day. Arranged in Khorog (PECTA), Murghab or Dushanbe. |
| Bartang Valley | No | Covered by the standard GBAO permit |
Other border zones
- Khatlon border areas: a separate permit is reported to be needed close to the Afghan border (about 20 km), for example around Panj and Kumsangir. The official fee for a border district permit is USD 20.
- Afghanistan: most crossings are closed to foreigners. Western governments advise against all travel to Afghanistan.
Regular visas, visa on arrival and invitations
Embassy visas
Tajik embassies and consulates issue all visa types: tourist (T), business (K), work, study, private and others. Apply if you are not eligible for the e-visa, or if you need a longer stay or another purpose.
- Tourist visa fee (domestic consular rate): USD 30 single entry, USD 50 multiple entry, for up to 60 days. Fees at embassies abroad may differ.
- Express processing at an embassy is reported at about double the normal fee.
- Some embassies are reported to ask for a medical certificate (including an HIV test) for stays of more than 3 months.
Visa on arrival at Dushanbe airport
A visa on arrival is available only at the Consular Bureau of Dushanbe International Airport, for citizens of 140 countries. The Consular Department advises applying in advance through the Visa Electronic Application Center (www.visa.gov.tj), and some visa types need a confirmed invitation. Do not rely on getting a visa at the airport without applying first: an e-visa or visa-free status is far safer.
Visas are not issued at land borders.
Letter of invitation
- Visa-free visitors and e-visa applicants do not need an invitation.
- Some regular visas (business, work, private, and sometimes tourist visas at embassies) need an invitation confirmed by the Main Consular Department of the MFA. The fee is USD 10 per person.
- The invitation is requested by the inviting company or person in Tajikistan, not by the traveller.
Registration
Who must register
| Visitor | Rule |
|---|---|
| E-visa holder | Exempt |
| Visa on arrival (T-visa) holder | Exempt (per US Embassy) |
| Visa-free visitor staying up to 10 working days | No registration needed, if you leave within that period |
| Visa-free visitor staying longer than 10 working days | Must register within 10 working days of arrival |
| Regular visa holder | Must register within 10 working days, unless exempt under an agreement |
| Citizens of some CIS countries and Uzbekistan | Special terms under bilateral agreements |
Working days exclude weekends and public holidays. In practice, 10 working days is about two weeks.
Change in progress
On 7 October 2026, the lower house of parliament approved a bill to extend the registration period from 10 to 15 working days. It still needs approval by the upper house and the President’s signature. Until the new law is published and in force, follow the 10-working-day rule.
How to register
- Register at the migration office (OVIR) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. In Dushanbe: Mirzo Tursunzoda Street 5.
- Bring your passport and the address where you stay.
- Processing can take up to 3 working days. Fees depend on the length of stay.
- If you move to a different address after registering, you may need to register again. The UK government advises registering separately for each new address. Ask your hotel or operator.
- You usually need a passport photo and may have to come back the next day to collect the proof of registration.
- The UK government says hotels can no longer register guests. Your hotel or tour operator can help with the process.
Fines
If you do not register when required, you may be fined and your departure may be delayed at the border or airport. The fine is reported at 10–15 calculation units (about 780–1,170 somoni in 2026), and the registration fee at about one unit (78 somoni). Keep your registration document until you leave.
Tip: if you are visa-free and plan to stay longer than about 10 working days, an e-visa can be the simpler choice. E-visa holders do not need to register.
Passport, borders, customs, drones and medicines
Passport validity
- At least 6 months beyond your arrival date (UK and US government advice, and the Tajik e-visa page).
- At least 2 blank pages.
- Passports reported lost or stolen are refused.
Air and land entry

- Most international flights arrive in Dushanbe, with some in Khujand. Main hubs with connections are Dubai and Istanbul.
- The e-visa is accepted at international airports and at the main land crossings open to foreigners. Borders can close without notice, so confirm your crossing before travel.
- Main crossings with Uzbekistan: Oybek–Fotehobod (Tashkent–Khujand), Jartepa–Sarazm (Samarkand–Panjakent), Sariosiyo–Bratstvo/Tursunzoda (Denau–Dushanbe), Andarkhon–Patar (Kokand–Konibodom), Bekobod–Khashtyak and Gulbahor–Ayvaj (Termez–Shahritus).
- Crossings with Kyrgyzstan for travellers: Kyzyl-Art (Pamir Highway, Murghab–Sary-Tash) and Guliston–Kyzyl-Bel (Isfara–Batken, reopened in 2025). Crossings may close without notice.
- China: Kulma–Karasu (Murghab–Tashkurgan), daytime on weekdays; a GBAO permit and Chinese entry rules apply.
- Afghanistan: only Panji Poyon is currently open (US State Department). Do not travel to Afghanistan.
Customs basics
- No limit on bringing in foreign currency. Declare amounts above USD 10,000.
- Keep your entry declaration. You may need it on exit.
- Exit: a declaration is needed above USD 3,000. Amounts above USD 10,000 need proof of origin.
- There is no legal limit on Tajik somoni, but there is little reason to carry large amounts out of the country, as somoni are hard to exchange abroad.
Drones
Drones need advance permission from the Tajik government and must be registered with the State Committee for National Security. Without permission, your drone may be confiscated at customs. If you plan to fly a drone, ask us well before your trip.
Medicines
- Carry medicines in their original packaging, with a copy of your prescription.
- Bring only quantities for personal use.
- Some medicines legal elsewhere are controlled in Tajikistan. Check with the Ministry of Health and Social Protection or the nearest Tajik embassy if you take strong painkillers, sleeping pills or psychotropic drugs.
Photography
Do not photograph military sites, border posts, checkpoints, airports or government buildings.
Extensions, overstays and children
Extending your stay
- E-visas cannot be extended.
- Visa-free stays cannot be converted into an e-visa inside Tajikistan. Apply for the e-visa before your trip if you need more than your visa-free period.
- Regular visas can be extended at the MFA Consular Department in Dushanbe (34 Pushkin Street). A decision takes up to 10 working days. You must show a valid reason.
Overstay
Do not overstay. Leave before your permitted stay ends, and allow time to reach a land border. Official fees for an expired visa (Government Resolution No. 476, 2025):
| Overstay | Fee |
|---|---|
| Up to 5 days | USD 50 |
| 6 to 15 days | USD 100 |
| 16 to 30 days | USD 200 |
| Each further month | USD 100 |
If you overstay, you must get an exit visa from the MFA Consular Department in Dushanbe (valid up to 7 days) before you can leave; it is not issued at the airport. Overstays can also lead to fines, detention, deportation and an entry ban.
Children
- Every child needs their own passport.
- Children need the same visa or visa-free status as their nationality allows. E-visa applications are made for each person separately.
- If a child travels with one parent or without parents, carry a notarised consent letter from the absent parent(s) and a birth certificate. Tajik rules on this are not clearly published, so treat this as a strong recommendation.
Combining Tajikistan with Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan
Many travellers visit two or three countries in one trip. Plan your entries carefully.
- Visa-free visitors: you can leave and re-enter Tajikistan, and in practice a new entry starts a new stay. The official rules state a 30-day limit but do not publish a rolling limit (such as “30 days in any 60 days”) for the unilateral list. Iran’s agreement is the exception (30 days in any 90). Border officers may question frequent re-entries. We mark this point as not fully confirmed.
- E-visa holders: a single-entry e-visa ends when you leave. If you go from Tajikistan to Uzbekistan or Kyrgyzstan and come back, buy the multiple-entry e-visa (USD 50). The 60-day maximum stay and 90-day validity still apply.
- GBAO permit: carry it for the whole Pamir trip, including the exit to Kyrgyzstan via Kyzyl-Art.
- Kyrgyz side of Kyzyl-Art: recent reports (2025) say no Kyrgyz border-zone permit is needed for the Kyzyl-Art/Bor-Dobo crossing. This is not confirmed by an official source, and the crossing has closed at short notice before, so confirm with your operator.
- Registration: each new entry starts a new registration period. If you register, keep the document until you leave.
- Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan have their own visa rules. Check them separately for your nationality.
Helpful tips and common mistakes
- Apply for the e-visa only at www.evisa.tj. Lookalike sites charge more.
- Apply early: at least 2 to 3 weeks before travel.
- Visa-free travellers forget the GBAO permit. Your visa-free status does not cover the Pamirs.
- Single-entry e-visa, but a multi-country route. If you exit and come back, you need a multiple-entry e-visa.
- Check dates. Your trip must fit inside the e-visa validity, and you must enter GBAO within the permit dates.
- Count working days, not calendar days, for registration.
- Print everything. Mobile coverage in the Pamirs is weak. Carry paper copies of your visa, permit and passport.
- Spell your name exactly as in your passport.
- Allow buffer days at the end of a Pamir trip. Roads, weather and border closures can cause delays.
- Do not rely on the visa-free list in older articles. It changed in 2022, 2024, 2025 and 2026.
