Sunny slopes an hour from Tashkent, powder in the spruce forests above Issyk-Kul, a new gondola in the Tajik mountains: three ski resorts, what they cost and how to choose.
On this page
Central Asia is not the first place most people think of for skiing, and that is part of its charm. The slopes are uncrowded on weekdays, prices are a fraction of the Alps, the sun shines most days, and après-ski means plov and hot tea. Here are the three resorts we know best: Amirsoy in Uzbekistan, Karakol in Kyrgyzstan and Safed Dara in Tajikistan.

Amirsoy, Uzbekistan
Amirsoy opened on 21 December 2019 as Uzbekistan's first modern ski resort, in the mountains above the Charvak reservoir, about 65 km from Tashkent. Its slopes run between 1,630 m and 2,290 m, and the resort lists about 10 runs with some 15 km of piste, the longest more than 3.5 km. There are no black runs, which makes it ideal for beginners and intermediates. Two gondolas and a chairlift serve the slopes; the Amirsoy Express gondola, opened in 2021, carries 2,400 people an hour from the access road in 9 minutes.
With snowmaking, the resort promises up to 100–120 days of skiing a season, usually from late December to late March. In 2025/26 an adult day pass cost 320,000 so'm on weekdays and 390,000 at weekends (about USD 27 and 33), and a full rental set 345,000 and 425,000. Weekends and public holidays are much busier than weekdays. If you only want the view, read our guide to Amirsoy cable car prices.
Karakol, Kyrgyzstan
Karakol ski base, 7 km above the town of Karakol at the eastern end of Issyk-Kul, is the resort serious skiers talk about. Its runs drop through spruce forest from around 3,000 m to 2,300 m, with four chairlifts, 14 trails and more than 20 km of piste, plus excellent off-piste, ski touring and even heli-skiing. The season runs from December to March, and the snow is usually dry and light.
It is also very good value: in December 2025 a day pass cost 1,400 som from Tuesday to Thursday and 1,700 som from Friday to Monday (about USD 16 and 19), with higher prices over the New Year holidays. Karakol is about 400 km from Bishkek, so most visitors stay a week. Since December 2025 there have also been seasonal flights to Karakol from Almaty.
Safed Dara, Tajikistan
Safed Dara is the former Soviet Takob ski base, built in the 1970s in the Varzob district north of Dushanbe and reopened in 2016 after it was rebuilt. A modern cable car carries skiers up the mountain in about seven minutes, and a hotel stands at the bottom. The terrain is smaller than at Karakol, but it makes a wonderful winter day out from Dushanbe, with mountain views from the top. The season starts in mid-December, once there is enough snow, and lasts until about Navruz, the spring new year, in late March.

Other slopes nearby
- Chimgan and Beldersay, Uzbekistan: older resorts next to Amirsoy, about 80–85 km from Tashkent, with simpler lifts.
- Kashka-Suu, Orlovka and ZiL, Kyrgyzstan: small, inexpensive slopes within one or two hours of Bishkek, popular at weekends.
Interesting facts
- Amirsoy welcomed more than 660,000 visitors in 2024, in winter and summer together.

Important notes
- Insurance: make sure your travel insurance covers skiing and, if you go off-piste, mountain rescue.
- Off-piste: never ski outside the marked runs without a local guide; avalanches happen every winter.
- Altitude and sun: the air is thin and the sun strong, especially at Karakol. Use high-factor sunscreen and drink plenty of water.
- Holidays: from 31 December to mid-January and at weekends, roads, lifts and hotels get crowded. Book early.
- Roads: mountain roads can close for a few hours after heavy snow; allow extra time.
- Cash: bring local currency for rental, lessons and cafés; card machines do not always work.
What to bring
- Ski goggles and sunglasses.
- Waterproof gloves, a warm hat or helmet liner, and a buff.
- Thermal base layers and a warm mid-layer.
- High-factor sunscreen and lip balm.
- Your own boots if you have them; rental boots vary.
- A passport or ID card for equipment rental.
