Istaravshan is one of the oldest towns in Tajikistan, known for its bazaar, its craftsmen, especially knife-makers, and the Kok Gumbaz madrasa. It is about 80 km from Khujand, a drive of 1–1.5 hours.

The driver can wait while you explore and bring you back the same day: tick "I need the return journey too". Istaravshan is also on the road south to Dushanbe, if you are travelling on.
