Khiva via the desert fortresses → Bukhara

From Khiva to Bukhara with the desert fortresses on the way: your driver collects you from your hotel in Khiva, at the nearest gate if you are staying inside Ichan Kala, at around 07:00. The first stop is Toprak Kala and Ayaz Kala, an hour and a half away, with about an hour at each.

Then comes the long crossing of the Kyzylkum desert to Bukhara, for long stretches beside the Amu Darya. The whole day takes 9–10 hours, arriving in Bukhara in the evening.

Take water and snacks: there are few cafés on the road. Entrance tickets at the fortresses are paid on the spot.

What the price includes

Air-conditioned cars with English or Russian speaking drivers. Prices are for the whole vehicle, not per person, and include fuel, tolls and waiting time.
