Nukus, the capital of Karakalpakstan, is home to the Savitsky Museum, with its famous collection of Russian avant-garde art, and is the starting point for trips to Moynaq and the Aral Sea. The drive from Khiva is about 200 km and takes around 3–3.5 hours across the Amu Darya.

With an early start you can visit the museum the same day. Ask us to stop on the way at the desert fortresses of Toprak Kala or the Chilpyk tower, and we will quote the extra time.

Drinks and snacks are best bought in Khiva or Urgench: there are few places to stop along the road.
