About this trip

The train from Tashkent to Samarkand takes about two hours. This trip takes two days, and goes through Tajikistan instead: an old Silk Road city, a mountain lake at more than 2,000 metres and the Zarafshan Valley, with a border crossing on foot at each end.

The route

  • Khujand, one of the oldest cities in Central Asia, with Panjshanbe Bazaar in its arched market hall and the fortress by the Syr Darya
  • The mountain road south through Shakhristan and the Ayni area, into the Fann Mountains
  • Iskanderkul, the lake named after Alexander the Great, with Snake Lake beside it and the waterfall known as the Fann Niagara a short walk away
  • The Zarafshan Valley and Panjakent, then the Jartepa border and Samarkand

How it works

You cross both borders on foot: from Uzbekistan into Tajikistan at Oybek, and back at Jartepa. A different car and driver meet you on each side, so you never wait for a vehicle to clear customs. The drivers know the route but do not guide; an English-speaking guide can be added on request.

The price is for the whole car, not per person. It covers all the driving, both border handovers and drop-off anywhere in Samarkand. The night near Iskanderkul, meals and any entrance fees are paid separately.

Good to know

  • Bring your passport and check whether your nationality needs a Tajik e-visa. Since you leave Uzbekistan and come back, check that your Uzbek entry allows it too.
  • The route runs from May to October, when the mountain roads are open.
  • If you do not give a drop-off address when you book, the tour ends at Registan Square.

Who it suits

Travellers going from Tashkent to Samarkand anyway, who would rather spend two days seeing Tajikistan than two hours on a train.

Day by day

  • Day 1

    Tashkent to Khujand and Iskanderkul

Meet your driver in the Hotel Uzbekistan car park, opposite the Uzbechka market, and drive to the Oybek border. Cross into Tajikistan on foot; your Tajik driver meets you on the other side.

In Khujand, walk through Panjshanbe Bazaar, one of the busiest markets in the region, see the fortress and take a short drive around the centre.

Then head south through Shakhristan and the Ayni area into the Fann Mountains, with photo stops where the road allows. Arrive near Iskanderkul in the evening and stay overnight in a guesthouse by the lake.

  • Day 2

Iskanderkul, the Zarafshan Valley and Samarkand

Start the day at Iskanderkul, then walk to Snake Lake next to it and on to the Fann Niagara waterfall.

Drive west down the Zarafshan Valley, past mountain villages and the river, to Panjakent. Depending on the time, stop at the bazaar or at Sarazm, a UNESCO-listed settlement more than 5,000 years old, right by the border.

Cross into Uzbekistan on foot at Jartepa, where your Uzbek driver is waiting, and continue to Samarkand. The tour ends at your hotel, the railway station, the airport or any address in Samarkand.
