About this trip

The Nuratau Mountains rise out of the steppe between Samarkand and the Kyzylkum, a low range of grey rock and green valleys where Tajik-speaking villages have grown walnuts and apricots for centuries. Hayat is one of them: a few dozen houses along a stream, a mosque, orchards, and a family guesthouse where the food comes from the garden. Nothing here is set up for tourists, which is the point.

This is a short, easy trip for people who want a night of village life and one good walk, between the Silk Road cities. It works as a break between Samarkand and Bukhara, or as a weekend from Tashkent.

The walk

After lunch, a local mountain guide takes you 5–6 km up the valley and onto the ridge, two to three hours at an easy pace: through the orchards, past stone houses older than anyone remembers, up a juniper-dotted slope to a lookout over the range and the villages below. The Nuratau is home to the Severtzov argali, a wild mountain sheep, and in the evening light you often see them on the far slopes. Back to the guesthouse for dinner.

The guesthouse

A family home with guest rooms, beds or kurpacha mattresses, a shared bathroom with hot water and a courtyard under the walnut trees. Lunch, dinner and breakfast are cooked by the family: soup, plov or stew, bread from the tandoor, fruit from the garden, tea without end. Your hosts speak Tajik, Uzbek and Russian; the guide has basic English.

Good to know

  • Getting there: transport is not in the price, so the trip fits any route. Add a private car when you book: from Samarkand (3–4 hours, a scenic drive) $85 by sedan for up to 3 or $199 by SUV for up to 6, one way; from Bukhara (4–5 hours) $105 or $239; from Jizzakh railway station (2 hours; the Afrosiyob train stops there) $39 by sedan. Combine them: arrive from Samarkand, leave for Bukhara. Other pickups: message us on WhatsApp.
  • Guide: the local mountain guide who walks or rides with you speaks basic English. If you want a professional English- or Russian-speaking guide with you for the whole stay, add one when you book: $150 per group on the two-day tours, $300 on the three-day.
  • When: the village is open all year. March to June is green and full of blossom; September to November is golden and quiet; July and August are hot in the valley but fine on the ridge in the morning. In winter the walk depends on snow.
  • Fitness: the walk is easy to moderate, with about 400 m of climbing. Walking shoes, a hat and water are enough.
  • Add a horse: a two- to three-hour ride can be added to the afternoon instead of, or after, the walk.
  • Longer: the two-day horse tour rides instead of walks; the three-day horse tour adds a second ride and a plov lesson with the family.
